Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) - Case Studies

YOU CANNOT ALWAYS CONTROL WHAT HAPPENS, BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS CONTROL HOW YOU DEAL WITH IT.”

According to Oxford English Dictionary Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is, "a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them" and "a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour."
NLP means how to take control of your mind with respect to your thoughts and feelings and how to change and regulate them to change yourself and your way of life. NLP enables you to be aware of yourself, your self esteem (self worth) through self regulation aka self discipline. Therefore, NLP effectively enables you to develop your communication and inter-personal skills that we regard as life skills.
Psycho-Analysis is based on the question “why”, while NLP is based on the question “how”. Psycho-Analysis or self analysis helps you to question and seek the reason why you want to change the way you think about any object, experience, person, fact. Once you have answered the question “why”, then NLP’s question “how” helps you to find the way you can change the way you think and initiate the changes you intend to make in yourself. This therefore qualifies the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of NLP. How you can use your subjective experience to successfully study and change your pattern of thoughts to successfully change your behaviour pattern.
The Principles of NLP:
1.    Conscious and Unconscious Mind: Your conscious mind analyses, criticizes and thinks logically. Your unconscious mind controls your bodily functions viz. heartbeat; breathing; memories; dreaming while conscious mind rests when you are asleep; wisdom; creativity and problem-solving capabilities.
2.    Submodalities: You have five senses and you take information from the outside world through your senses. The way you take the information from your senses define the way you think: you think in picture – visual thinking, you think in words/speech/sound (auditory), think on inputs based on smell (olfactory) , you think on inputs based on taste (gustatory), you think on inputs based on experience/activity/action (kinesthetic). The quality of the images, sounds, smell, feelings are the “submodalities”. Therefore, the quality of our thoughts- the submodalities determine the way our thoughts affect us. When we make a big picture of the things we are associated with, our feelings will be more intense. When we make a smaller image of the things we are associated with, our feelings will be less intense. Therefore, we can learn how to control our submodalities to manifest the kind of feeling we need when we need them.
3.    Changing Your Neurochemistry with respect to Psycho-Analytic question “Why” and NLP question “How”: The Way You Feel: Personal Freedom means having the freedom to control your thoughts and manifest the kind of feelings you want in your life. We are often prisoners of our own thoughts and allow ourselves to think ourselves into a problem. How to change how you feel (How to Feel Wonderful): It is easy to think of a time you felt wonderful; focus on the sights, sounds, smells, tastes in the form of the feelings when you felt wonderful; get the get the source of the sense or feeling in your body and the direction it moves, for instance, you remember a song, you listen to the song playing within you. You focus on the sound. You feel the sound arising from your mind. Then you allow the song to flow to your entire body – your heart, etc. in the form of a relaxed feeling.
Similarly, a thought of somebody who annoys you, intimidates and irritates you. This is the cause of a feeling of anxiety and annoyance in you. You feel the person in the form of an image. Change the image into a black and white image. Change the image or picture from a big image to a smaller image. Feel the image move away from you. Gradually change the image into a comic image that you like and often visualize. This will change your feeling towards the original image and you will feel the stress and anxiety ease out of your mind. This helps you to easily and effectively manage your negative feelings and emotions with confidence.
4.    Structure of Certainty: In order to create any change, it is necessary for you to change your belief and create your new beliefs that allow you to maintain the change into the future. Our thoughts and beliefs have a structure. For instance, your belief, the sun will rise next day is based on a feeling of certainty. This feeling of certainty is connected to your submodalities in the form of the quality of sight/image, sound, smell, taste feelings associated with the belief. The submodalities shape or structure your belief. Repetition of the phenomenon of sunrise reinforces your submodalities: the feeling of certainty, hence your belief.  Now, if I tell you there is a solar or lunar eclipse next day. It is contrary to your feeling of certainty and belief of sun rising next day. Your submodalities structure associated with the feeling of certainty and belief for solar and lunar eclipse makes you think and question my statement. When you want to change your habit of smoking cigarettes, you have to change your structure of certainty to change your belief and habit. You have to change the submodalities associated with your habit and you can do it with the help of the Belief Change Technique also known as Belief Swish Pattern.
5.    Timelines: We think of time in certain ways. The images of the past will be in a different place than the images of the present or the images of the future. This we can mark even in the structure of our submodalities. This describes our mental space in the form of an imaginary line from the past into our future. Imagine yourself brushing your teeth in the past, present and future on your timeline. People who code time as “in time”, the present, generally don’t remember past very much. They are too much involved in the present and lose track of time and often miss the time schedules, deadlines. On the other hand, people who tend to code time “through time”, can usually remember incidents easily and tend to be punctual. You discover your timeline to consciously and unconsciously make the changes you want in yourself.
Discover Your Timeline: On your timeline, think of a time you brushed your teeth five years ago. Think of the time you brushed your teeth one year ago. Think of the present moment of you brushing your teeth. Think of a time where you will brush your teeth one year in the future. Think of a time when you will brush your teeth five years in the future. A. Draw an imaginary line from your thoughts your brushing your teeth in specific times in the past, present and future and extend it further out into the past and the future. You will discover how your certainty structure and beliefs associated with your act of brushing your teeth as change with time and how you can conscious and unconsciously change in the future.
6.    Anchor and Association: Any stimulus that is associated with a specific response. Anchors happen naturally, and they can also be set up intentionally, for example, ringing a bell to get people’s attention, or more subtle, standing in a particular place or taking a particular posture when answering negative and positive questions. Anchoring is a process of associating an internal response with some external trigger so that the response may be quickly, and sometimes covertly, re-accessed. Anchoring can be can be visual (as with specific hand gestures like thumbs up for like or check/alright; folding hands for salutation (Namaskaar)), auditory (by using specific words and voice tone), and kinesthetic (as laying hand on someone’s shoulder). Criteria for anchoring:
a.    Intensity or purity of experience
b.    Timing; at peak of experience
c.    Accuracy of replication of anchor
Association: As in a memory, looking through your own eyes, hearing what you heard, and feeling the feelings as if you were actually there. This is called the associated state. The memory and its associated submodalities in the form of feelings (visual, auditory, Olfactory, gustatory and kinesthetic) that trigger negative emotions in you are the Dissociation.

7.    Information:
You use Anchor, Association and Dissociation, Timeline with Swish Pattern in context with Aspects of Information (Inputs/Data/Stimulus) to help you to consciously and unconsciously change your structure of Certainty (submodalities) to change your habits and behaviour.

You can effectively use NLP to the following everyday challenges:

Hi Sunipa, I am pleased by your questions. Because that shows some one gives a scope to understand me and my purpose. I am teaching for over 34 years. But at the same time I have lot of apolitical movements in mind for social cause like 1. Spreading awareness of rights and duties in democracy. 2. Insist respect of women and oppose ugly projection of women in ads, movies as object. 3. Oppose communalism and try to build communal harmony. 4. Career motivation to young generation and build movement against drugs, alcohol, smoking, Pre and extra marital nonsense. Etc I certainly need support. I caught/exposed some one a decade back. They keep spoiling my image. So naturally I have to spread my thoughts. My students know and support me. You may not be knowing so as an introductory message I wished I should make you aware. I need your feedback. No matter age I tell everyone to bless me on this path. Thanks. -- Mahesh kulkarni

Thank you Mr. Kulkarni, I reciprocate and respect your thoughts and values. I firmly believe that one gender cannot earn respect at the cost of the other gender(s). When women feel unsafe in a society, then how can then men be safe in that society. No progress, growth and development of a gender or segment of a society cannot be reciprocal to the progress, growth and development of the others. I certainly am honoured by you asking me for my feedback and I hope I have been able to explain it adequately to you. With regards and gratitude

Gentleman, You remind me of a rather sad stint with Century Rayon as Learning and Development Head in 2015. I was inducted as a woman or lady n the higher echelons of the management that was predominantly a male bastion. You can call it as a reservation quota created by the management of Century Rayon. 1. I often experienced snide remarks with gender underpinnings. I even had experienced a lady Deputy Manager P&A deliberately touch my posterior. 2. The Senior President Mr. Chitlange voice just two months after my joining the organisation publicly voiced his dissatisfaction in my performance, because had refused the Lady Deputy Manager P&A's request to participate in a group dance being organised for the Factory Management's QI Award Function Night. In response, when I asked him whether my refusal to participate in the dance was the reason. He abruptly tried to brush aside the query asking me to meet him in his office. 3. When I asked the AGM P&A to document and give me the perks and emoluments I was entitled to, he had it sent through a factory hand who gruffly tossed it on my desk and stomped out of the room, only to be followed in by the AGM himself asking me to provide proof of my car, etc. to avail the perks and even accused me of being very argumentative because I had asked him to document the list of perks and emoluments. I immediately returned the document to him telling him that I would not avail the perks when I had specifically mentioned my parents (family) were using the car at their place of residence. 4. Since 2001 I suffer from Asthma and I was in severe grip of the malady from the time I joined Century Rayon. The same year I had lost my Father too. I took sick as well as leave for Diwali to be with the family in Belgaum. I had literally lost my voice and was under medication when I received a phone call from Mr. Subodh Dave, Joint President P&A and my reporting head. He gruffly asked me to meet him as soon as I was in office. When I met him, he told me that the AGM had complained about my behaviour and he wanted me to tender my resignation or he would take action against me. When I asked him the reason why he was not allowing me to speak on my behalf, he simply refused to listen to me and asked me not to step into the office premises till my notice period was over. 5. I tendered my resignation and followed the official procedure for appointment with Mr. Om Prakash Chitlange, and tried to meet Mr. Dave in his office, who seemed annoyed to see me and literally held on to his pair of trousers apparently seeming to be asked to remove them. Abhorring his rather obscene gesture I stepped out of his office trying to retain my self respect. 6. On the appointed date and time, I met Mr. Chitlange in his office. He was mentally prepared to grill me with a fusillade of reason of my lack lustre performance since my joining the office (In October and I was meeting him in November). I immediately accepted his points with the point that I was isolated from the mainstream of activities: the meetings, plans and I was planning and organising the L&D functions without any annual budget and documents as none of the documents and files were in place. Ever since I joined office, I was not part of the weekly review meetings and department meetings too. Whenever I visited the Departmental Heads and their associates, they refused to meet me as they were busy with urgent work, while they were organising training intervention for their department without the support or even formally informing the L&D Department. He remained silent and invited me to tea the following day. I politely refused his invitation through an email communication. 7. I the day I handed over my office (my last working day) at Century Rayon, I did not meet Mr. Subodh Dave, Joint President P&A for the reasons best known to you now. My pay was cut citing rather flimsy reason of my extended sick leave, while they sent me a cheque of Rs. 4270.00 in 2017 in the name of annual bonus payment, which I returned to them (Century Rayon). So, Mr. Kulkarni, it is quite evident, those who are vociferously vocal are the ones who seek justice and judgement. While those who do not remain between the lines as the dots in the gray area with a question mark hanging on their integrity and their very being; making them doubt themselves only to make all efforts to reaffirm their faith in the adage "Silence is Golden" to retain their sanctity and faith in themselves. I firmly believe in myself and I do not need any affirmation of anyone for my credibility and that is my core strength. That is my integrity that reinstates my sense of self worth. I may not be as high as you in social stature and also in professional achievements, but I believe in humanity and the truth of being humane, come what may. That gives me the strength to move on in life without seeking formal endorsements, accolades and recognition to for my conviction.
·  I hence believe in empathy and have faced many challenges too. Yet, I remain steadfast in retaining it. I am thankful to everyone and everything in my life for contributing to my life's experience. Mr. Kulkarni, I thank you once again for writing me your message. I hope I have explained myself to you, though I may not be as articulate as you are, Sir. I too write blogs to document and share my life's experience and learning. I am sharing the link to the blogs with you. You may read them if would like to. I have also documented my Century Rayon experience in the blog overlooking the stark reality that by doing so, I may be jeopardizing my career and my professional life; but I have documented it as a learning and not a note of complaint or instigation. You may not even read this message I am writing to you; Though I am writing it with the best of intention of retaining and maintaining the harmony within me and around me. Hence, I wish you success, safety, peace, prosperity, health, happiness, love and compassion. Sunipa, On your second comment: Kindly don't take me wrong. Son of very sr govt officer and spiritual person, I am also spiritual and value "values in life". I believe in respect for every individual no matter age, property, gender or any such label. My every day follow up is to remind myself that God is Omni present. God or godly principle or that energy is in every particle of this universe, every single cell of this universe. I believe in comparison , respect and care. I hate gender based incline or treatment. I hate the way females are humiliated in Corporate and even in families. I am worried about the downfall of culture and ethics in last 30 years in India. I am know no individual can stop this. But I wish to at least intensify my movement against projection of woman as an object in ads movies and TV and internet. It is horrible. Kindly never think I am avoiding or insulting. Either I may be busy or I may not be in good state of mind to draft some good text. I condemn and hate what experience you got in one Corporate. I have daughters and treat every student as like my son/daughter same do I have for you. I was online and on LinkedIn but was not in good state of mind due to death of two persons around. So I visited your profile but could not draft reply. Never misunderstand me or anybody keep some scope. --- Mahesh kulkarni
