Language a Learning the Easy Way (Fun Way of Learning Using Transliteration)-II
When we communicate in any other language other than our mother tongue we tend to compose in our mother tongue the message we intend to communicate. Then we "substitute" the words of the message with the words of the language we want to communicate in. This results in a confusing message that can have funny or rather embarrassing outcomes. True, this is what we term as "Transliteration". The root cause of such faux pas and confusion is because the Parts of speech are common in all the human languages, but different languages use different grammatical rules in composing sentences; needless to say, it becomes a nightmare for language learners who often give up on learning a language fearing the reaction to the mistakes they may make in course of learning.
A fact, both the educators, the facilitators, and the learners ignore is transliteration is an integral part of the language learning process. In fact, in applied learning process viz. functional learning of a human language a learner is encouraged to analyze and learn the principles of structuring a sentence in the new language he/she is learning. The learner invariably learns to discriminate between the principle applied to the use of the parts of speech of his mother language with that of the language he/she is learning.
Here is a simple example of how we can use transliteration to teach a new language encouraging the learner to enjoy the literal translation (transliteration) of the word in the new language. In the following table, the first row has an image of a clock and a dog. A learner mentions their names in his mother tongue and enjoys the transliteration of the two words in his mother tongue. For example, word for a clock in the Hindi language is "Ghadi" and "Kutta" is the word in Hindi for "Dog" When a learner joins both the words "GHADI-KUTTA" he is amused! When the learner is asked to replace the words with the language he/she is learning viz. English, the resultant compound word is "WATCH-DOG"
Through this method of transliteration of known language to learn a new language helps the learner to over the fear of negative repercussions on mistakes made while learning a language.
The facilitator or educator can discuss with the learners:
- the concept associated with the word "WATCHDOG".
- What is its significance?
- Existence of such word and concept in their mother tongue.
- On affirmative response to question 3, learners can be encouraged to narrate their experience with a watch/guard dog.
You may want to know the efficacy of this method of learning:
- Learner overcomes the fear associated with transliteration and is prepared to understand FIGURES OR PARTS OF SPEECH with the grammar (language principles) in terms of SEMANTICS in due course of language learning.
- This method of Applied Learning encourages learners to share their experience and help each other in narrating their experience through COLLABORATIVE METHOD (TEAM-GROUP ACTIVITY BASED) OF LEARNING.
- Considering the second benefit, learners also effectively learn new concepts associated with new words they learn. Refer to the following table that has few images to help learners learn a new word and concept of a "BELL BOY". The facilitator helps the learners understand the concept and its relevance.
- Often working professionals, job aspirants and those on travel assignments to distant places use the Functional Method of language learning this method can help the learners to overcome their #subconsciousbias #perceptualbias #professionalprejudice #socialbias when an educator facilitates a collaborative way to learn the semantics or new words and concepts.
- When we consider the fourth benefit we cannot ignore the fact,
- this method when applied with the collaborative method of learning can not only help the learners in cognitive learning and development but also in behavioral learning
- When the learners narrate their experience and discuss them the educator can facilitate them in developing their listening skills, oratory/speaking skills, understand oneself #selfawareness based on learners' perception of one another. Most important, appreciate and value #diveristy
- The educator can help the learners to overcome the fear of a learner's limitations, for instance, learner stammers while speaking. The educator can consciously make the learner aware of the disability and how they prevent themselves from overcoming their own fear and disabilities when they laugh and make fun of anyone else's.
- The educator can facilitate learners to learn that we achieve #selfrespect when we respect everyone and all that is in and around us. Principles of learning are founded on #focus #courage #grit #optimism #empathy #fixityofpurpose #humilty and above all, #dignity and how all these are an integral part of an individual's character, personality. Learners with the strength of their character are able to value #dignityoflabour to respect and value the work of each and every person that contributes to creating a big picture of how learners have achieved their immediate purpose of learning a language and how they can use it in achieving greater purpose in their lives. This is the spirit of Collaborative Method of Learning.
